Steven Gerrard should exploit ‘dear enemy’ to sign Scott McTominay for Rangers

Manchester United are reportedly ready to allow Scott McTominay a loan deal away from the club in January. That is according to the Sun, who suggest Aston Villa and Leeds United are keen.

But Rangers should certainly consider throwing their hat in the ring.

The Scotland international was previously linked with an Ibrox switch at the end of last year by The Mirror. Rangers wanted McTominay on loan for the remainder of the Scottish Premiership campaign, but Jose Mourinho wanted him in first-team action at Old Trafford.

Now, a move to Glasgow could be just what McTominay needs.

Rangers would offer him regular first-team football in Glasgow and, if they keep up their current form, the Ibrox side should still be in Europa League action.

Some might argue that loaning McTominay to a Scottish club would be an error by Mourinho. However, it is no secret how much the United boss respects Rangers manager Steven Gerrard as a player. The Portuguese has admitted himself that he tried signing Gerrard on three separate occasions.

“Steven Gerrard is for sure one of my favourite enemies – an enemy with all the good feeling I can express with that word in football.

“For sure, in England he is my dear enemy. For sure, he is the one that made me a better manager. To stop him or try and stop him has been very, very difficult.

“I tried to bring him to Chelsea, I tried to bring him to Inter (Milan), I tried to bring him to Real Madrid but he was always a dear enemy.”

Learning from the Liverpool legend could help McTominay improve his midfield game and Rangers would be adding an excellent midfield option in the process.

Rangers should certainly ask the question when January rolls around.
