Glasgow Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has provided a fitness update on four Light Blues players ahead of this weekend’s Scottish Premiership return to action at Ibrox.
The Gers will be eager to pick up where they left off before the international break, having won five and drawn one of their six games to go top of the table, without conceding once.
On Saturday, Rangers host Dundee United, and speaking to Rangers TV – via the Glasgow Times – Gerrard provided updates on Kemar Roofe, Jermain Defoe, Cedric Itten and Jordan Jones.
Roofe has has used the break to raise his levels in terms of fitness and sharpness, Defoe has been sidelined since pre-season, and Itten and Jones have been nursing knocks.
On the subject of having given his players time off with their families, Gerrard said: “I think it is important that they freshen up from a mental point of view.
“We have trained a couple of times now and the standard has been excellent. You can see the likes of Kemar, who have been given work to do away from here, now starting to look really ready, which is fantastic.
“It has also been a chance for us to get injured players closer to getting back into full training. Jermain Defoe is on the verge of that, Cedric Itten is on the verge of that and Jordan Jones’ injury is not as bad as first feared.
“We are hoping, in a week’s time, we should be in real good shape from an injury point of view as well. It has been a positive international break so far.”
With Rangers having enjoyed a superb start to the season, Gerrard’s positive update will come as music to Bears’ ears.
While they may not all be back to full fitness by the weekend, the boss seems confident about how his squad will look in a week’s time.
It’s a long season ahead and the Rangers squad will be tested to the limit, so it’s great to hear that it’s been a positive international break in terms of the players’ fitness.
