Steven Gerrard says there’s one player at Liverpool he’s ‘very excited’ about

Liverpool have had a couple of close calls already this season, but they have had a perfect start to the season.

Indeed, the Reds have taken six points from a possible six so far, and while they’re not in full flow just yet, it’s been a great start.

One player who has had a mixed beginning to this campaign is Florian Wirtz.

Wirtz joined Liverpool in a club-record deal earlier this summer, and he’s not exactly hit the ground running just yet.

Wirtz has been tipped for big things, but, so far, the German has been a mixed bag in the Premier League.

However, speaking to ESPN, Steven Gerrard has claimed that he does love Wirtz as a player, and he’s very excited to watch him this season.

Steven Gerrard ‘very excited’ about Florian Wirtz

Gerrard was taking part in a challenge where he had to compare numerous Premier League midfielders.

The Liverpool legend was asked to pick between Man City’s Rodri and Florian Wirtz, and while he picked Rodri, he did reserve some special praise for Wirtz, sharing how excited he is to watch him play.

“One’s a number 10 and one’s a six, it’s very different. I love Wirtz, very excited to watch him but over their career so far, you’d have to go with Rodri,” Gerrard said.

Florian Wirtz stats for Liverpool so far

It’s very early days for Wirtz so far at Liverpool, but it has to be said that the German hasn’t set the world on fire so far.

The German’s stats from his opening two Premier League appearances certainly don’t inspire much confidence, it has to be said.

No goals and no assists so far are the standout stats here, and that’s something Wirtz will be hoping to change as soon as possible.

Liverpool face Arsenal this weekend, and that would be the perfect way for Wirtz to get off the mark for the Reds.
