Steven Gerrard has told BT Sport’s live post-match coverage of Rangers’s win over St Johnstone on Sunday (broadcast on 22/9 from 11:45) that Steven Davis was his man of the match in the 4-0 victory.
The Gers produced an outstanding second-half performance to claim the three points in some style at McDiarmid Park.
Alfredo Morelos opened the scoring just after the break before Connor Goldson doubled the lead with a good header on the hour. Jermain Defoe bagged a brace in three minutes just before the final whistle to wrap up the points.
Defoe’s first goal came moments after Davis had produced an incredible double block on the goal-line. The Northern Ireland international denied St Johnstone twice in quick succession to ensure that the home side could not set up a grandstand finish.
And after the game, Gerrard insisted that he felt that Davis was the best player on the pitch as he discussed the amazing blocks.
“I think that summed Steven Davis’s performance up,” he told BT Sport. “I don’t know who you gave your man of the match to, but he was my man of the match. Ryan Jack followed him really, really close. We’ve got good players in good form at the moment, and it’s great to see.”
Davis has been a fantastic signing for Gerrard’s side. It had initially appeared that he may struggle to prove influential after a slow start following his return to Ibrox at the start of the year.
But the 34-year-old is playing brilliantly at the moment. His partnership with Jack is developing nicely, and it appears that Davis has plenty left in the tank at this stage of his career.
