Steven Gerrard has told Rangers’s official website that he was delighted with Sheyi Ojo’s cameo during the Gers’ win on Wednesday night, insisting that it was the most positive he has seen the winger be in some time.
Rangers remain in a fantastic position in the Scottish Premiership after securing three points in their first league game back.
Jermain Defoe scored the decisive goal as the Light Blues beat St Mirren 1-0 at Ibrox. They remain two points adrift of Celtic, but do have a game in hand over the league leaders.
The game saw Joe Aribo replaced by Ojo with 10 minutes remaining. And while he was only on the pitch for a short period, Gerrard insisted that he was very happy with what he saw.
“The main thing is we have got over the line. I was really pleased with Sheyi’s cameo – that’s the most positive I have seen him for quite some time so hopefully he is going to kick back into a bit of form as we are going to need him, and he is going to help us,” he told the club’s official website.
TBR View – Could Ojo prove Rangers’s surprise package?
It has been a tough spell for the Liverpool man. The 22-year-old has not scored since September. His last league start came back in October.
He has shown a few glimpses of his quality since arriving at Ibrox in the summer.
And it is perhaps telling that Gerrard has seemingly decided to keep him rather than potentially look to allow him to return to Liverpool this month.
He arguably has a lot of work to do to win his doubters over. But Gerrard clearly has faith in him.
So perhaps it is not out of the question for Ojo to prove to be Rangers’s surprise package during the remaining months of the campaign.
