Steven Gerrard has suggested on Instagram that Liverpool duo Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson should have both been included in the FIFA Men’s Team of the Year, after their omission from the side.

Only two Liverpool players were named in the official Team of the Year, despite the Reds finishing second in the Premier League with a remarkable record points total of 97 points – and of course, winning their sixth Champions League trophy.

Indeed, those players were Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson and defender Virgil van Dijk. But the likes of Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, Gini Wijnaldum, Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane all missed out on a place in the eleven.

The team did not include a right-back, bewildering Liverpool fans as to why Alexander-Arnold was overlooked. Similarly, Marcelo was dropped by Real Madrid – and Gerrard cannot understand why the duo were not included, posting on Instagram.

TBR’s view – Liverpool stars can feel very hard done by

It is a travesty that Alexander-Arnold is not included, when the team has three centre-backs in Sergio Ramos, Matthias de Ligt and van Dijk included. Similarly, Marcelo had a somewhat disappointing 2019, and Robertson is much more deserving.

Cristiano Ronaldo was superb despite changing clubs and Lionel Messi was, well, Messi. But in midfield, Luka Modric struggled to replicate his 2018 successes. There are certainly spaces in which other Liverpool players deserved to be.
