Steven Gerrard has told Rangers’ YouTube channel that he has no doubt that Cedric Itten is going to become a fantastic player for the Gers in the future after his latest goal for the club on Sunday.
Itten continued his remarkable record since arriving at Ibrox in the summer. The 24-year-old has scored four domestic goals for the club. And they have all come against the same opponent.
It was his header that earned Rangers a point at Motherwell this weekend. It was a good, composed finish from the forward 17 minutes after he had been brought on.
The goal ensured that Rangers remain unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership this season. And Gerrard seemed to hint that Itten had left him with plenty of food for thought ahead of their next game next Saturday.
“I think Cedric epitomised what we were trying to do in the second-half. He was aggressive out of possession, he worked his socks off. He showed quality and he does what he does, which is score important goals and that’s the reason why we brought him in,” he told the club’s YouTube channel.
“I’m really pleased for him and he’s pushing for a starting place so we’ll see what happens moving forward. But I’m really pleased for the kid, delighted to have him and he’s only going to get better and better.
“He’s a development one. We need to be patient with him. But I’ve got no doubts, in the long-term, he’s going to be a fantastic player for this club.”
Itten may be waiting for his Rangers spell to really ignite. But he has started just six games in all competitions, including two in the top flight.
And there have definitely been glimpses of real quality. He scored a screamer on the club’s previous visit to Fir Park, while his finish on Sunday was a touch of class.
And Gerrard’s comments certainly hint that Itten may not be far away from another start after he came to Rangers’ rescue this weekend.
