Steven Gerrard has confirmed that Ryan Jack will miss Rangers’s next game due to injury and is a doubt for the weekend, while Scott Arfield is also unlikely to feature, in comments reported on the club’s Twitter page.
Saturday’s 1-0 defeat proved to be a painful result in several ways for the Gers. Arfield had to be taken off during the first-half against Hearts while Jack was replaced shortly after the hour-mark at Tynecastle.
Both men have been key players for Rangers since Gerrard’s arrival so it certainly added to insult to injury as they were knocked out of the Scottish Cup.
And the Englishman has now confirmed that he is not expecting to have either available for Wednesday’s clash with Hamilton or Sunday’s game at Ross County.
“Jack has a bruise underneath his heel,” he said, as reported on the club’s Twitter page. “Not in the squad tomorrow & a doubt for the weekend. Arfield has had a scan and it is not as bad as originally feared but he is still a big doubt for the next couple of games.”
It is a big blow for Rangers to lose two of their stalwarts at the same time. The Gers surely need a flawless run between now and the end of the season if they hope to win the Scottish Premiership title.
That task has been made much tougher. While Arfield has not always been at his best this season, he leaves a big void to fill. And Jack has often been indispensable at Ibrox.
After the weekend’s defeat, several players within the Gers squad already needed to prove that they can step up.
With Jack and Arfield sidelined, that is now imperative.
