Rangers manager Steven Gerrard shares his delight with defender Matt Polster for his individual performance against Ross County on Wednesday night.

The Gers secured a routine 2-0 home win at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership fixture and it means they stay five points behind league leaders Celtic, who have played a fixture more.

Jermain Defoe opened the scoring near the end of the first-half and had a hand in Scott Arfield’s goal shortly after the restart.

But there was concern when the veteran striker was soon forced off the pitch afterwards on a stretcher.

Polster was handed his first ever league start for Rangers in midweek and he looked comfortable in place of injured captain James Tavernier in the XI.

The 26-year-old right-back got forward well when he could against Ross County and didn’t look out of place.

Gerrard hailed the American defender following his contribution.

“I think he’s feeling that in there seen he’s got ice in a couple of places so we’ll have to get him rested and recovered. I’m pleased for him because he works hard sever single day and he’s a good person around the place,” Gerrard said, as quoted by the club’s official Twitter account.

“He deserved an opportunity and I thought it was a positive performance from him.”

TBR’s View:

Polster is beginning to show he’s a better option than Jon Flanagan in the full-back position at Ibrox and may be moving up the pecking order in the squad.

He’s unlikely to overtake Tavernier anytime soon, but there are definite signs of improvement in his displays and he’s starting to look more confident on the ball.

The pacey wide player needs to continue impressing whenever he gets the chance and it’s a good sign that he can step into the league XI.
