Steven Gerrard believes Rangers have a “fabulous” talent on their hands with Kai Kennedy, The Daily Record reports.

Gerrard has allowed Kennedy to train with the first-team this week and has been shocked by his ability. Kennedy travelled with the first-team squad for the game against Hamilton Academical and was the back-up choice if one of the 18 players in the matchday squad dropped out.

But Gerrard has admitted that he thought about including Kennedy in the final 18. The 17-year-old has been excelling for the reserves and he appears to be on the brink of a first-team breakthrough.

Gerrard said (via The Daily Record): “He earned the right to be the 19th man. His training performances and his cameo against Leicester (in a friendly) – I was thinking about putting him in the 18. All of our lads at the academy should take note of what he’s done this week. I think he’s been outstanding.

“People look at Kai like he’s this wee player who doesn’t belong with men but he’s trained like a man all week. He’s been the most consistent and he’s a fabulous little player. It wasn’t just a token gesture because he’s a kid.

“It’s also to send a message to some of the players who are outside of the 18 that Kai was next from what I seen the majority of this week in training. He deserved to be out there.”

TBR’s view

Kennedy is probably Rangers’ most exciting young talent at the moment. Despite his young age and his small stature, the teenager has earned his chance to push for a first-team spot.

The Scotland U19 starlet is heading in the right direction and he could make his competitive debut this season. Gerrard is certainly a big fan so Kennedy just needs to keep impressing and keep improving.
