Steven Gerrard has made it crystal clear he wants Rangers to sign attacker Ryan Kent on a permanent basis, but confesses it’s not down to him.

The 22-year-old has been impressive at Ibrox this campaign since joining for the campaign on loan from Premier League club Liverpool.

He’s scored five goals and supplied nine assists in 37 games across all competitions so far.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the left-winger would cost over £12million in the summer to sign permanently.

Ahead of the Old Firm clash with Celtic, Gerrard has admitted to hearing rumours about Kent’s future and has made it clear the preference would be to extend his stay in Scotland.

“I’ve read the rumours and speculation. I’m not sure who has put that price on Ryan. Whether it’s his agent or whether it’s Liverpool. My focus is on Ryan Kent being available for the weekend, I’m pleased he is available,” Gerrard said in his press conference.

“In terms of the future moving forward that decision is out of my hands. Liverpool know we want him here, the players knows we want him here, his representation know we want him here, but in terms of the decision it’s not down to me.”

TBR’s View:

Kent definitely has been one of the more successful signings under Gerrard and landing him on a permanent basis seems a no-brainer if they can.

But blowing a summer transfer budget on one player is also not a smart move and it depends on how much the English dazzler will cost, plus how much money is made available for spending.

Kent has shown he’s got the ability to win games by himself with his direct approach and excellent dribbling, while at his age his end product at decision making should only improve over the next few years.

He is guilty of going missing sometimes in the big games and there is an element of risk with him, but Gerrard clearly is a big fan of his.
