Steven Gerrard has been quoted by The Herald as saying that Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard is one of the best players in Scottish football – after Rangers took Celtic apart at Ibrox, winning 4-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Edouard, 23, netted his 21st goal of the season on Sunday afternoon but 10-man Celtic failed to stop Rangers, as Gerrard’s men continued their run towards an unbeaten season. With two games left, they are almost home and dry.
Callum McGregor’s red card allowed Rangers to dominate, scoring four goals through Jermain Defoe, Alfredo Morelos and a brace from Kemar Roofe. An excellent performance, but Gerrard had praise for Celtic star Edouard.
Speaking after the match, Gerrard took the time to label Edouard as one of the best players in Scotland and also appreciated David Turnbull and Mo Elyounoussi when discussing 24-year-old Jack Simpson’s display in defence.
“We’ll analyse his [Simpson] performance and so will he, because he’s a kid who wants to get better,” Gerrard said. “I thought he did a lot of things well. He was up against one of the best players in the league in Edouard.
“Edouard gets assisted well by Elyounoussi and Turnbull. It was a tough challenge for him. He was on a yellow card, which is always edgy. All in all, I thought he handled the situation really well.”
TBR’s view – Is Edouard the best, on his day?
More technically gifted than Alfredo Morelos, Edouard lacks the power of the Colombian. The duo are probably up there as the best strikers, but right now, it is hard to look past the likes of James Tavernier of Steven Davis.
Davis’ wealth of experience and consistency at the base of the Rangers midfield has been the stability and guidance Rangers need, while Tavernier’s goals and assists from right-back are simply sensational – and unheard of.
Edouard is up there but judged on his form this season, is he in the top three? Probably not. Is he in the top three on his day? Without a doubt. A move, though, this summer is more than likely for the Frenchman.
