Steven Gerrard spent a chunk of his career playing alongside Xabi Alonso at Liverpool, but he believes Manchester United had someone just as good as him.
The partnership between Alonso and Gerrard was special for the Reds. Their passing abilities allowed them to create many opportunities for Liverpool’s attacking players.
While Alonso went on to get even more recognition post-Liverpool due to his success at Real Madrid, he was certainly one of the best midfielders in the Premier League during his era.
However, even Gerrard is willing to admit there was one other midfielder with just as many great qualities on the ball as him.

Steven Gerrard cannot pick between Xabi Alonso and Paul Scholes
Gerrard recently spoke to Rio Ferdinand Presents about the best players he shared a pitch with when creating his ultimate five-a-side teams, and he mentioned many great footballers.
However, the two that stood out for him were Alonso and Manchester United legend, Paul Scholes, with whom he played for England.
“Alonso and Scholes, I can’t pick between them. I played with Xabi a lot more than I played with Scholsey, but I’ve watched Scholsey for many, many years and understand the level that he played at.”
Gerrard refused to pick between them, which led to him creating a five-a-side team of just Liverpool players, specifically people he shared the pitch with for England.
Liverpool Team: Hyypia; Hamann, Alonso; Torres, Suarez
England Team: Cole; Lampard, Scholes; Shearer, Rooney
While Gerrard and Scholes never managed to win anything together with the Three Lions, he did get to share some special moments alongside Alonso.
They were two of Liverpool’s key players during the historic 2004-05 Champions League victory, while they also won the FA Cup together in the following year.
How do Xabi Alonso and Paul Scholes compare as players?
When it comes to Scholes, most fans often focus on comparing him to either Gerrard or Frank Lampard due to their similarities and the fact that they all played for England.
However, comparing with a player such as Alonso is just as interesting because they had very similar styles of play in terms of their abilities on and off the ball.
Both men had brilliant careers for their respective clubs, winning countless trophies and having plenty of individual success.
| Player | Scholes | Alonso |
| Games Played | 716 | 700 |
| Goals | 155 | 43 |
| Assists | 82 | 76 |
The fact that Gerrard speaks so highly of them is eye-opening for fans, with the Liverpool legend being willing to put the rivalry with Manchester United aside to acknowledge Scholes.
