Steven Bergwijn hopes Netherlands form has caught Antonio Conte's eye

Steven Bergwijn hopes his form for national side Netherlands prompts a change in his fortunes at Tottenham Hotspur.

The 24-year-old has only made four Premier League starts this season, three of which came in the opening three games of the season under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Since Antonio Conte has took over the reins, the former PSV Eindhoven star has only made one top-flight start under the Italian.

Bergwijn’s playing prospects were dashed even further when Spurs signed Dejan Kulusevski on deadline day in January.

Kulusevski has been a revelation since arriving in north London and it seems that Bergwijn faces a uphill task ousting the Swedish international and starting alongside Heung-min Son and Harry Kane.

Despite enduring a difficult time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Bergwijn is currently in the midst of a purple patch for Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands.

Fresh after his two goals against Denmark, Bergwijn backed up his brace with an equaliser against Germany last night.

It now means that Bergwijn has four goals and one assist to his name from his last three games for the Oranje.

Hoping his international exploits have caught Conte’s eye, Bergwijn told AD: “At the club I don’t play much. I am happy that the national coach calls me.

“Everyone wants to play, of course. I have to keep my head up and work [hard in] training. Then we’ll see what happens in the summer.

“You don’t forget to play football. But of course you feel [it when] you don’t play that much. It was nice to be here again. We have a good and fun group.”

Steven Bergwijn will be hoping his impressive international form results in him being rewarded with a rare start when Newcastle United come to the capital on Sunday.
