Steven Bergwijn could prove the perfect Christian Eriksen replacement at Tottenham

Tottenham have today completed the £27 million signing of Steven Bergwijn from PSV, according to BBC Sport.

The club has moved quickly to replace Christian Eriksen who departed for Inter Milan yesterday.

Bergwijn might not be a direct replacement for the Danish performer but his form this season implies that he would be more than capable.

Typically during his career, the 22-year-old has operated on the flanks. Transfermarkt shows that he has played 88 games on the left, 61 on the right, 22 as a striker and just 10 in the hole behind a striker.

Those games as a number 10 came this season and it was a position that he looked at home in.

During those outings, he bagged two goals and registered seven assists, proving to people that he is actually well-equipped to play centrally and not just out wide.

Options in attack are something which Jose Mourinho hasn’t really had since he arrived at Tottenham.

Options

Bergwijn will complement what he does have and add some versatility to his front line.

Only time will tell where Mourinho sees Bergwijn playing in his team but his statistics this season have actually been better than Eriksen as a number 10.

The Dutchman’s pass success ratio at PSV was up at 87.7% in Eredivisie, compared to Eriksen’s 80.3 in the Premier League (Who Scored).

Bergwijn also makes an average of 39 passes per game, compared to Eriksen’s 33.

Of course, statistics don’t tell a whole story and the Dutch top-flight is nowhere near as competitive as the Premier League.

The proof will be in the performances but the numbers do work in Bergwijn’s favour.

If Mourinho has signed him to replace the departed Eriksen, then the numbers suggest that he might have found a player boasting real potential.
