Steven Bergwijn has told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf that he is excited to work under Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho, and has been impressed by the club’s facilities – though a move is yet to be confirmed.

Bergwijn, 22, is set to become Tottenham’s third signing of the January window after chairman Daniel Levy has brought Gedson Fernandes to the club on an 18-month loan – while Gio Lo Celso has signed a permanent £27million deal.

The Netherlands international was in north London yesterday to complete personal terms and undergo a medical, and it is believed an announcement will be made on Wednesday at some point.

Speaking to Telegraaf with a move yet to be confirmed, though, Bergwijn spoke of his excitement at working under Mourinho and claimed that he always chooses a Premier League side when he plays FIFA on the Playstation.

“I have always looked up to a top coach like Mourinho. And now I’m going to play for him,” Bergwijn said. “It’s great to be here. Just look at the facilities around us. When I play on the Playstation Fifa, I almost always choose a team from the Premier League. I look forward to playing in that great atmosphere.”

TBR’s view – Bergwijn can be a bargain, or an expensive flop

The Dutch Eredivisie is renowned for producing talent after talent and Bergwijn is seen by many as the best up-and-coming prospect. Hardly surprising, given he has had a hand in 72 goals during his 149 PSV appearances.

At a fee of £27million, Bergwijn is hardly cheap. Everton though they had landed a bargain when they paid a similar fee to lure Ajax captain Davy Klaassen to Merseyside – only for the midfielder to flop. It can work both ways.

Spurs and Bergwijn will be hoping for the best, but it must be said, that there is a chance he could struggle to adapt. A move is set to be confirmed, but nothing has been announced as of yet.
