Liverpool icon Steve Nicol has told ESPN that Jurgen Klopp has got to sell Dejan Lovren this summer AC Milan reportedly eyeing a £25million move, and the pundit had identified his replacement.
The Times claimed earlier this week that the 29-year-old was a target for Milan, but Liverpool want as much as £25million. The Reds also boast Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip at centre-back.
But Croatia international Lovren only managed 18 appearances for Liverpool last season, with Klopp preferring both Gomez and Matip to the former Southampton star alongside van Dijk.
Nicol thanked Lovren for his efforts at Anfield but believes it is time for the powerful centre-back to leave Liverpool, and has urged the Reds to sign Matthijs de Ligt as his replacement this summer.
“Yes he’s worth £25m, yeah, absolutely,” Nicol said. “No [I would not keep him]. You have Gomez, you have Matip. Lovren’s been a good servant to Liverpool. It would be fantastic if we did get De Ligt.
“But Lovren’s been a good servant. The guy’s got a big heart and he’s given everything for Liverpool. He’s played well on occasions. He gives you everything, sometimes to the detriment of his performance.”
Bringing in de Ligt as a replacement for Lovren would be excellent business for Liverpool, though it is likely to be somewhat expensive.
Spanish newspaper AS have claimed that Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona have both tabled £67million offers for the Netherlands international, as they enter talks to land the Ajax star.
With £25million of that figure being covered by Lovren’s sale, Liverpool simply have to go into the market and lure the teenage defender to Anfield this summer.
