Steve Nicol states what Liverpool must do even better to win the Premier League title

Liverpool find themselves at the top of the Premier League standings as Arne Slot continues to make a massive impression since replacing Jurgen Klopp at the helm.

The Dutchman has spearheaded the Reds to six wins and a defeat in seven Premier League games, having also recorded a statement 3-0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford in that period.

It’s still early doors but Liverpool look like they could be up there for the Premier League title, although Arsenal and Manchester City are breathing down their necks as they find themselves just a point behind the Reds.

Slot’s side are undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with, but Steve Nicol believes they still need to improve on a few aspects to be in the reckoning for the title.

Liverpool have kept five clean sheets from seven games this season and have conceded just two goals, which is a sign that they’ve kept things really tight at the back.

However, Nicol believes the Reds’ rearguard hasn’t been as good as the stats seem to suggest, adding that they need to improve on both ends of the pitch to compete with Manchester City and Arsenal.

“Under Slot, they have more players behind the ball when they are in possession,” said Nicol on ESPN UK’s YouTube channel.

“When it gets turned over, they have more defenders in place to defend. That stops the opportunities for the opposition.

“Konate and Van Dijk are the best partnership and on black and white they’ve let two goals in, but given away some opportunities. Kelleher and Alisson have made some saves – I don’t think they are as watertight as the stats would suggest.

“I still think they’ve given opportunities up and they can get better at that. Going forward as well, they can score more goals. To win the championship, you have to get things right every time.

“We can pat them on the back, but to get past Manchester City and Arsenal, they have to be a little better than they are.”

Title talk still premature for Liverpool

Slot has imprinted his philosophy at the club and the players have flourished under his tutelage, but it’s still far too soon for Liverpool to be dreaming about the Premier League title.

Arsenal and Manchester City have been hot on each others’ heels over the last two seasons and are expected to be up there once again.

Liverpool can go toe-to-toe with any team in England on their day, but it remains to be seen if they can be consistent enough over the course of a 38-game league season.
