Arsenal defender Calum Chambers has been praised by BT Sport pundit Steve McManaman for his performances amid “pressure” from within the Gunners ranks.
The versatile 26-year-old has been deployed at right-back in recent games amid competition from conventional right-backs Hector Bellerin and Cedric Soares.
Chambers delivered a solid display against Slavia Prague on Thursday, defending well, providing a great outlet on the flank, and providing the assist for Bukayo Saka’s goal.
“Fair play to him,” McManaman said on BT Sports 1 (8:30pm, 15/4/21).
“He has played very well since he has come in at right-back considering Bellerin’s on the bench, Cedric’s on the bench.
“There’s pressure there for him. He stood up yet again, been excellent, Calum Chambers. All credit to him.”
Chambers has been at Arsenal since 2014, when he joined from Southampton in a reported £16million move.
Sadly, he missed out on the whole of 2020 due to a cruciate ligament injury, which came just as he was getting his Gunners career back on track.
A centre-back by trade, opportunities are few and far between in that position at Arsenal right now due to the sheer amount of competition.
However, he has done well to leapfrog Bellerin and Cedric into the starting XI at right-back, and both player and coach deserve credit for how things have panned out.
