Steve McManaman comments on Leeds United’s hopes of signing Erling Braut Haaland

BT Sport commentator Steve McManaman has suggested, albeit with tongue firmly in cheek, that Leeds United might have a chance of signing Erling Braut Haaland at this rate.

Red Bull Salzburg took on Liverpool yesterday with all eyes on the powerful 19-year-old, who has scored an incredible 28 goals in 22 games this season.

Such form has seen him linked with Europe’s biggest clubs and slapped with a reported (The Mirror) £84 million price-tag.

Despite this, Haaland was born in Leeds and has previously made it clear his footballing dream is to win the Premier League with the Whites, for whom his dad Alf-Inge Haaland is a former player.

McManaman was commentating for BT Sport’s coverage of the game (10/12/2019) when the topic of Haaland’s Leeds roots came up. He seemed to suggest that if Leeds keep up their current form, perhaps Haaland could one day become a viable option.

“You never know (co-commentator) Ian (Darke) they (Leeds) are giving it a good crack.

“Them and West Brom are opening a little gap. But you know how hard it is to get out of the Championship.”

TBR’s View

Leeds United fans would love Haaland to join the club but, at this rate, it would appear an unlikely scenario. Some of Europe’s biggest clubs are on the hunt for the Norwegian and Leeds might have to wait until they establish themselves back in the Premier League before having any chance of signing the giant goal-machine.

However, Leeds moved 11-points clear in the promotion battle yesterday evening by beating Hull City 2-0 whilst talk of a Qatari takeover continues to rumble on. Who knows, perhaps Haaland could still one day become a Leeds United player.
