Steve Howey has told Newcastle United fan Steve Wraith during an Instagram live session that if he could sign any player with the financial power of the prospective new owners – he would go after Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland.
Still only 19 years of age, Haaland is considered one of the best teenagers in European football and is showing the kind of potential that the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo showed at his age – if not more.
A fully-fledged Norway international, Haaland scored 29 goals in 27 games for RedBull Salzburg before joining Dortmund in the January window, for a fee of just £17.1million (BBC). He has since continued such form, netting 12 in 11 Dortmund games.
Newcastle need a striker and when asked who The Toon’s new owners should sign, Tyneside icon Howey stated he would love to see his old club land Haaland in the coming months – but it depends how much money will be used for transfers.
“A centre-forward,” Howey responded, when asked who Newcastle should sign. “But it depends on the kind of money you’re talking about. We could sign the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, if backed.
“I’ll tell you who is good, and I know his Dad. Erling Haaland,” Howey continued on Wraith’s Instagram. “We could have signed Haaland for less than we paid for Joelinton.”
TBR’s view – Haaland would be incredible, but there is no chance
Haaland had the pick of the clubs in the January window given his bargain release clause, and the Norwegian star fine-combed the interested parties to find the right one for him. This summer, he is likely to have suitors after scoring 40 goals in 33 games.
Dortmund suit Haaland as they are an attack-minded side under Newcastle-linked Lucien Favre. The likes of Jadon Sancho, Marco Reus, Mario Gotze and others can all link-up with Haaland and that brings the best out of the teenager.
It is a complete contrast to Newcastle under Steve Bruce. Defensive-minded, Haaland would be left bereft of chances and unless their tactics completely switch this season, Haaland would surely choose a different club over Newcastle.
