Leeds United became the latest club linked with a summer move for Ivan Toney, with TEAMtalk reporting over the weekend that the Whites have asked Brentford to be kept informed about the striker’s situation.
Toney is attracting attention from a host of Premier League clubs after a stunning start to life with the Bees. He has already scored 25 goals and contributed nine assists in the Championship.
TEAMtalk reports that Brentford now value Toney at £30 million. And Leeds are reportedly battling the likes of Arsenal, West Ham and Leicester for his signature.
It will please a number of Leeds fans that they are being linked with one of the most lethal goalscorers in England right now.
But for a former Leeds boss, the links will probably come as no surprise.
Steve Evans – who managed Toney at Peterborough – previously stated last June that he could see the 24-year-old leading the line in the top flight or at Elland Road at a time when Leeds were battling for promotion.
“I’d seen him play for Scunthorpe at the end of the previous season and he was virtually a one-man team,” he told the Peterborough Telegraph. “I was confident he would become a star and I can honestly see him leading the line at a Premier League club or at the biggest Championship club, Leeds United right now.”
TBR View: Evans may get chance to redeem himself for poor Bielsa claim
Of course, some fans may be less concerned by what Evans says. He once stated that Leeds should have appointed Steve Bruce or Mick McCarthy ahead of Marcelo Bielsa (via Sky Sports).
But he has worked closely with Toney. And there is no denying that the striker’s record is incredible. He has scored 65 league goals since the start of the 2018/19 campaign.
So there is every chance that Evans may redeem himself slightly for his Bielsa claim – should Toney end up at Elland Road in the summer.
