Steve Evans doubles down on suggestion Ivan Toney could be a Leeds United star

Former Leeds United boss Steve Evans believes that Ivan Toney could lead the line for the Whites.

The Peterborough United striker has been in fine form this season, scoring 26 goals in 39 games for the club. Unfortunately, their bid for promotion came up controversially short and Toney is now a wanted man.

Evans, who managed Leeds during the Massimo Cellino era, managed Toney during his stint at London Road.

Speaking to the Peterborough Telegraph this week, Evans suggested Toney could be perfect leading the line at Elland Road.

“I’d seen him play for Scunthorpe at the end of the previous season and he was virtually a one-man team. I was confident he would become a star and I can honestly see him leading the line at a Premier League club or at the biggest Championship club, Leeds United right now.”

It is not the first time that Evans has made such a claim. In 2018, whilst manager at Peterborough, the Scot told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire that Toney could play at Leeds ‘all day; after an impressive hat-trick display against Bradford City.

Of course, Leeds will likely be looking for another striker this summer, with the long-term plans regarding Jean-Kevin Augustin seemingly up in the air.

Toney would be a fantastic option, but not a cheap one.

Peterborough do not let their players go for a pittance and a recent report from The Scottish Sun suggested a £15 million price-tag recently.

If Leeds get promoted, it is a fee they could likely afford. If not, pennies will likely again be pinched.

But it does appear that Toney has Evans’ firm seal of approval.
