Steve Cooper wants patience for Tottenham Hotspur newbie Joe Rodon

The former manager of Tottenham Hotspur newbie Steve Cooper has had his say on the Welshman’s fairly slow start to life in North London.

Tottenham snapped up the centre-back in a reported (Guardian) £11 million deal, potentially rising to £15 million, from Swansea City earlier this month.

Unfortunately, it came too late for Rodon to be registered for Tottenham’s Europa League team and the 23-year-old has therefore only played one minute of football since joining Spurs.

But his former boss is confident that Rodon will soon find his feet at Spurs as he looks to focus on his current squad at the Liberty Stadium.

“It’s still early days for him,” Cooper told Wales Online. “I don’t think we should be talking too much yet. We wish him well and from afar we’ll be supporting him on that. Our focus is on the boys here. We’ve got to commit to developing the next set of players.”

Rodon is rightly being eased into a first-team role at Tottenham.

He would have likely featured in the Europa League clash with Antwerp in midweek if eligible and that remains a disappointment that Spurs could not get him registered in time.

With Ben Davies struggling as a centre-back in a back-four, it seems Mourinho may need to rely on Rodon with increasing regularly as the main back-up to current first-choice options Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez, and Toby Alderweireld.

So Tottenham fans will hopefully get a chance to see plenty more of Rodon as the season progresses.
