Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce has come out in defence of Joelinton, amid recent reports (Daily Star) he could be axed for this weekend’s game against Crystal Palace.
The Brazilian has had some difficulty adapting to English football since his £40 million summer move from Hoffenheim (BBC Sport), and has returned just three goals so far.

The South American has featured in all 26 of the Magpies’ Premier League games, but there has been talk Bruce could finally wield the axe on the 23-year-old this weekend and instead start Dwight Gayle.
Bruce said in his Friday press conference that Joelinton is actually a doubt for the game, which he could see as an opportunity to change things up.
If Bruce was feeling disappointed with Joelinton deep down, he certainly didn’t let that show when speaking about the player to the media.

He said (Chronicle – 21/02, 09.31): “A natural goalscorer is something which there’s not many around. So he [Joelinton] has to keep working and improving. His finishing is excellent in training. He doesn’t get into positions enough which is what we’re working on.
“Unfortunately, Joe will be measured on one thing: goals. I have to say his team play, work-rate and attitude towards it – he never shies away from it.
“We know there’s a talent there. He’s a talented player and the kid’s got a heart as big as himself. We all hope he can score a few more. It’s been a sharp learning curve and he will learn from what’s been a difficult first half of the season for him.”
TBR’s view – Joelinton may benefit from temporary axeing
It’s clear Bruce really admires Joelinton and wants him to succeed at St. James’ Park.

Unfortunately at the moment, he isn’t giving his manager reason enough to remain in the starting XI.
It could be more beneficial for him, at this point, to spend a bit of time on the bench, which could encourage him to raise his game going forwards.
