Steve Bruce hilariously interrupted Kevin De Bruyne’s post-match interview posted on Manchester City’s Twitter after he scored during a 2-0 FA Cup quarter-final win over Newcastle – joking the Belgian is to stay on Tyneside.
De Bruyne, who turned 29 on Sunday, is regarded as one of the Premier League’s best players. His 12 goals and 19 assists in 39 league and cup appearances this season is proof he is back to his best, after last season’s injuries.
The two-time Premier League winner helped Manchester City reach the semi-finals of the competition as he stroked home a penalty after Fabian Schar pushed Gabriel Jesus. In the second half, Raheem Sterling made it two.
After the match, De Bruyne was giving a post-match interview to Manchester City’s media team and was speaking about the comfortable win – before Bruce appears, joking that De Bruyne is signing for Newcastle in an “exclusive”.
“He’s going to stay here,” Bruce said, as he passed De Bruyne’s post-match chat. “He’s going to come here, okay. That’s an exclusive out of Newcastle tonight. He’s had enough of Manchester City, he’s going to play for Newcastle.”
£51million signing (Guardian) De Bruyne has a contract until 2023 but looks unlikely to be going anywhere, anytime soon. He is arguably City’s best player, and will certainly be the driving force behind next season’s title assault.
It remains to be seen if Newcastle will finally get a £300million takeover approved by the Premier League, with both Bruce and Alan Shearer calling on the Premier League to make a decision.
