Newcastle manager Steve Bruce has admitted defeat in his pursuit of Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud, as per TalkSport.

Bruce’s side have struggled for firepower this season and like many clubs in the Premier League, went in search of a new striker this month.

But the Magpies boss has conceded he has tried and been unable to sign the French World Cup winner and believes he will head elsewhere before the deadline passes tonight.

On Sky Sports News at 9:48am, 31/01, Bruce added: “We had a bid accepted which would have nearly got to a record transfer eight days ago. Accepted by the club. Unfortunately the player wanted to stay where he was.”

Asked if it was for Giroud or someone else, he said: “Someone else.”

TBR’s View – Giroud could have been the new Rondon

Salomon Rondon is not the most glamorous striker who has ever graced the Premier League but he was a real hero on Tyneside last season.

That’s because he played the loan striker role expertly and selflessly despite operating in a side where he was often starved of service and support.

Giroud is similarly selfless. He won the World Cup without scoring a single goal because he made the decoy runs and held the ball up so well.

It looks like he will stay put and Bruce’s other attempts to find a hitman didn’t pay off.
