Everton advanced to the fourth round of the EFL Cup with a 5-2 victory over Joey Barton’s Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium.
The Toffees made it four wins from four for the season, proving too much for their League One opposition.
Carlo Ancelotti rung the changes from the weekend win agains West Bromwich Albion, with the likes of James Rodriguez, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure rested.
In defence there was another chance for young Niels Nkounkou to shine, after he caught the eye against Salford City in the previous round of the competition.
The Frenchman was lively once again here, and drew big praise from Evertonians on social media.
He even prompted praise from former Liverpool player Stephen Warnock, who branded him a ‘magnificent find’.
He wrote: “Have to say @Everton transfer business this summer has been excellent but it’s not only the household names that have impressed me, Niels Nkounkou is some player. A magnificent find. Bright future ahead and Digne has someone pushing him.”
TBR’s View – A diamond in the making?
Nkounkou has certainly made a big impression in his two games so far, but it is important for expectations to be kept in check.
The full-back is still only a teenager and is yet to make his bow in the Premier League.
However, he does look like if he knuckles down in training and keeps taking his chances in the cups, then Lucas Digne could have a highly capable backup for Premier League games.
