Stephen Warnock reckons Arsenal star will be wishing Gunners could do what Leeds did

Stephen Warnock reckons Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will have been looking at Leeds United and wishing that his Arsenal team could produce as many chances as the Whites did – following Sunday’s 0-0 draw at Elland Road.

Leeds dominated proceedings for much of Sunday’s encounter but failed to make the breakthrough, reminding many supporters of their first season under Marcelo Bielsa. They hit the woodwork three times in the second half.

Arsenal were forced to feed off the counter and following Nicolas Pepe’s red card, they had just one second-half chance – with Bukayo Saka failing to score after being played through on goal by Hector Bellerin. Illan Meslier coming up trumps for Leeds.

Ex-Leeds captain Warnock reckons Aubmeyang will have been looking at Leeds and wishing his Arsenal team could produce that many chances in a match. The Gunners have gone more than seven hours without scoring a league goal from open play.

“Aubameyang will be looking at Leeds and thinking: I wish my team were creating all these opportunities for me. These are the sorts of chances he would thrive on,” Warnock said, as per BBC Live (Sunday, 17.17).

“When I watch Arsenal and Leeds, the difference is Leeds have runners going beyond. It’s like football snobbery from Arsenal, they want everything short and precise. Sometimes you have to make the unselfish runs.”

TBR’s view -What’s going wrong at Arsenal?

Despite being almost a year in the hotseat at The Emirates, it is clear that Mikel Arteta does not know how to incorporate all of his best attacking talents. Aubameyang is clearly Arsenal’s best striker, but the Gunners continue to play him from the left.

That was, until Sunday. Aubameyang was used centrally but it had little impact. Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette were left on the bench, while Gabriel Martinelli is closing in on a return to fitness.

Arteta does not know his best attack, with Willian and Pepe also struggling for form. He has had plenty of time to work it out, though it is hardly an easy solution to crack. Only when he gets that solution right, will Arsenal finally profit.
