Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny has claimed goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher wants to leave Liverpool on loan.

The star, according to Kenny, was actually poised to move during the last transfer window, with a move to the Eredivisie on the cards.

But Kelleher’s plans were scuppered after Reds number one Alisson got injured.

The Brazilian suffered a should problem after reportedly colliding with a teammate in training, which caused him to miss three matches.

Alisson was due to be out for a longer period, but worked hard to return early.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Ireland’s game with England on Thursday, Kenny said (quoted by Goal): “We really need Caoimhin Kelleher to get matches under his belt as we feel he is ready to play for us.

“He was supposed to go on loan to Holland, to a couple of clubs in the Eredivisie in the last window but when the first choice got injured at Liverpool, that move was pulled.

“He wants to go on loan, he was ready to play and certainly we feel we would have benefited from that – but it’s not easy to play at Liverpool, they are world champions at club level aren’t they, so it’s not easy to play there.”

TBR’s View – Kelleher needs games

Hopefully Kelleher will get his wish in the next transfer window.

Now aged 21, the star is at a point in his career where he needs to experience regular senior football to shape him for later on in his career.

Opportunities just don’t seem likely at Anfield right now with Alisson firmly in place as number one with Adrian his backup, and so the youngster would be best served moving away temporarily.
