Stephen Kelly has posted a heartfelt message to Ayr United supporters on Instagram after the Scottish Championship season was cancelled – suggesting he will be returning to Rangers in the coming months.

Scotland Under-21 international Kelly joined Ayr on loan at the start of the season, despite making his debut for Rangers in a 4-0 League Cup win over Ayr back in September 2018. He has since impressed for the second-tier side.

Indeed, Kelly – who has impressed Steven Gerrard – netted six goals in 33 league and cup appearances for Ayr as well as laying on four assists during his time at the Scottish side. Below is his first league goal, during a win over Queen of the South.

Kelly has it all to do. The Gers boast a whole host of midfielders in the form of Steven Davis, Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara, Joe Aribo and Scott Arfield. Andy Halliday and Matt Polster are being used as full-backs, though they are naturally midfielders.

Kelly’s tough task does not stop there, though. Those returning from loan in Kelly’s position include Jamie Barjonas, Greg Docherty, Ross McCrorie and Jason Holt. Indeed, Kelly’s future at the club is also in doubt.

The midfielder’s contract is due to expire in the summer of 2021, and that makes the next 12 months make or break for Kelly’s future at Ibrox. Kelly has confirmed that he is due to return to Rangers, after posting a heartfelt message to Ayr.
