Sunderland icon Stephen Elliott has described Ross Stewart as “tremendous” following his impressive display today.
The Black Cats got their 2021-22 League One campaign off to a winning start at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland took on Wigan and, despite falling behind, rallied round to run out 2-1 winners on Wearside.

Gwion Edwards opened the scoring for the visitors on 15 minutes, but Aiden McGeady equalised from the spot two minutes later.
Stewart forced the penalty thanks to a fine run and went on to grab a well-taken winning goal on 53 minutes.
The 24-year-old led the line superbly, earning himself huge praise from fans and from Elliott on Twitter.
The Black Cats cult hero also name-checked Callum Doyle, Lynden Gooch and Corry Evans for their “very pleasing” performances.
Sunderland are next in action on Tuesday when they head to Port Vale in the first round of the EFL Cup.
