Stefan Bajcetic spotted in Liverpool training spells bad news for ‘special’ star

Stefan Bajcetic will be granted the opportunity to impress at Liverpool this season after spending the 2024/25 campaign out on loan.

The 20-year-old drew comparisons to Sergio Busquets while plying his trade for Las Palmas last season, where he resurrected his fortunes after a disastrous spell at RB Salzburg.

His breakout campaign in the 2022/23 season at Anfield stood as one of the few positives for the Reds that year as Jurgen Klopp’s injury-plagued side failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Bajcetic’s development stalled dramatically, as he spent almost the entirety of the following season on the sidelines and became somewhat a forgotten figure on Merseyside.

However, the Spaniard has been spotted training at the AXA Training Centre as Liverpool prepare to face Burnley in the Premier League, and his return to the first-team fold will not be welcome news for one senior player.

Trey Nyoni may lose his place at Liverpool to Stefan Bajcetic

Trey Nyoni was promoted to the senior squad over the summer alongside Rio Ngumoha as the youngsters impressed Arne Slot throughout pre-season.

Ngumoha became the fourth youngest goalscorer in Premier League history when he scored the match-winner in the 3-2 win against Newcastle United, and has somewhat outshone his fellow academy graduate.

However, Nyoni made a handful of appearances for the Reds last season but mostly played academy football as he was not yet deemed ready to fight for a place in the first team.

Jamie Carragher believes Nyoni is “pretty special”, and the midfielder has certainly appeared mature beyond his years every time he has stepped onto the pitch for the Reds.

The 18-year-old has a bright future at Anfield, but he faces fierce competition to force himself into Slot’s plans with the plethora of midfield talent in the squad.

Indeed, opportunities will be scarce for Nyoni, and he will likely make his first start for Liverpool this season when they host Southampton in the Carabao Cup.

But now with Bajcetic in the picture, having impressed in La Liga last season and during his maiden campaign for the Reds, it is likely the Spaniard will move straight ahead of Nyoni in the pecking order.

Trey Nyoni is highly rated at Liverpool

Although Nyoni must prove that he can compete among Liverpool’s best this season, he is one of the most talked-about young talents at Anfield.

John Barnes has also heaped praise on the young midfielder, and should he perform like he did in the pre-season fixture against Real Betis in 2024, his opportunity will arrive sooner rather than later.

“I thought all of the youngsters who came on in the second half did us proud, from Koumas, Nyoni, who came on in the first half, was very impressive, he’s only 17,” Barnes said after the match against Real Betis.

“Also, the thing about him that I saw. A lot of players at his age would play it safe and go backwards, but he looked forward, and when there were tight angles to play between people, he plays it, he plays with maturity.”
