Rangers defender Lewis Mayo was handed his first-team debut in the 5-0 pre-season win over Oxford United at Ibrox on Sunday.
And he immediately caught the eye, scoring the Gers’ third goal. Steven Gerrard gave Mayo a chance to stake his first-team claim and he looked confident throughout.
Not only did he help to keep a clean sheet, but Mayo also got on the scoresheet. It wasn’t the prettiest of goals as he bundled in a rebound after his initial header was saved.
But it will not matter to the 19-year-old, who is taking his first steps in the game. After playing for the U20 team last season, he made a case for a first-team promotion.
Lewis Mayo: first-team breakthrough next season?

Gerrard is likely to run the rule over Mayo a bit more closely now. After the departures of Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley, there are vacancies at centre-half.
George Edmundson has joined Rangers from Oldham Athletic but Gerrard has been looking for another central defender. But Mayo could be his answer.
Mayo would still be beneath Nikola Katic, Edmundson and Connor Goldson in the pecking order. But the Scotland U19 starlet could be a fourth-choice option.
Here are some tweets from Rangers fans discussing Mayo’s debut and his goal.
