Stars of the Tournament so far – Group C

Spain and Croatia currently lead group C on 4 points. Irelands exit was confirmed after their 4-0 loss to the current Champions, whilst Italy still have everything to play for in Monday night’s final group fixture. Here’s a look at the players who have shone so far:

Spain – David Silva

David Silva has been extremely impressive so far this tournament. He currently leads the competitions assist leader board, after creating 3 goals.

Silva really proved his importance to Spain in their 4-0 victory over Ireland. His creativity and skill on the ball spilt open the Irish defence as the Spanish moved forward with the ball.

Expect, Silva to be a key figure for Spain if they progress to the quarter finals. The attacking midfielder is a player with the ability to completely change the outcome of a match – we’ve seen this at both club and international level.

Italy – Andrea Pirlo

Despite his age, in my opinion Pirlo has been incredible during Italy’s first two group matches. Clearly his experience is proving vital amongst a young and fairly inexperienced team.

The 33 year-old has lead the Italian midfield against both Croatia and Spain. Without  him in the side I don’t they would have been in any position to progress past the Group stage.

Croatia – Mario Mandzukic

Having scored 3 goals already for Croatia, Mario Mandzukic has surprisingly emerged as his sides key player. His two strikes against the Irish propelled his team to a victory in the opening fixture of Group C. He then netted again, this time against the Italians, earning a 1-1 draw for Slaven Bilic’s men.

Without Mandzukic’s goals, Croatia would probably find themselves below Italy, just above Ireland at the bottom of the group.

Ireland – Sean St Ledger

The Irish have had a very tough tournament so far. I’ve struggled to really pick the star of their team considering they haven’t had much success.

The highest point of the group stage so far has to have been the Irish equaliser against the Croatian in their opening match. This was scored by Leicester defender Sean St Ledger.
