Newcastle United need to consider signing a left-back this month to finally solve a longstanding problem position.
Paul Dummett is the only senior left-back on Newcastle’s books but the Welshman seems to be constantly picking up injuries.
Rafa Benitez has tried a number of players in the left-back or left-wing-back position but it has been an issue all season.
Kenedy, Matt Ritchie, Javier Manquillo and Ciaran Clark have all operated as the left-sided full-back. This area is a clear weakness that Benitez needs to address.
Over the past week, Newcastle have been linked with both Stanley Nsoki and Antonio Barreca.
Both players would be shrewd acquisitions this month and help to end the left-back nightmare at St James’ Park.
Nsoki has played 11 times for PSG’s first-team and he is a highly rated teenage sensation. If Newcastle landed the 19-year-old, he could provide a long-term left-back solution.
The France under-21 international would be an exciting signing, but so would Monaco left-back Barreca.
The 23-year-old moved to France from Italy, having impressed in Serie A with Torino. Renowned for his pace, the ex-Italy under-21 international is out of favour at Thierry Henry’s Monaco but their loss could be Newcastle’s gain.
The Magpies have evidently been scouting in France for their solution to this left-back issue and either Nsoki or Barreca could be the answer.
