Stan Collymore wishes West Brom made approach for Rangers man

Stan Collymore has told the Sunday People (20/12; page 56) that he wishes that Rangers boss Steven Gerrard had been offered the chance to leave Ibrox for the West Bromwich Albion post.

Gerrard has done an outstanding job with the Gers. His side lead the Scottish Premiership by some distance. And they remain unbeaten in the top flight.

Rangers are also through to the knockout stages of the Europa League. It certainly looks to be a safe bet to assume that they will end their wait for silverware this term – perhaps ending their rival’s hopes of winning their 10th league crown in a row in the process.

The Ibrox faithful will be aware that Gerrard’s success will lead to interest from elsewhere – particularly if he goes on to win the Scottish Premiership title this term.

But Collymore has suggested that he would have liked to have seen the former England captain offered the opportunity to work in the Premier League already.

As the pundit reflected on the Baggies’ decision to appoint Sam Allardyce following Slaven Bilic’s departure last week, he claimed that it was a job that Gerrard should have been considered for.

“I can’t help wishing they’d gone for Steven Gerrard or another young manager and then backed them to build a team in the Premier League or Championship,” he told the Sunday People.

“Instead, they have gone for the ‘now, now, now’ type, someone who will guarantee to keep them up but who, with that guarantee, will bring the kind of stodgy, tepid football that was left behind 20 years ago.”

TBR View: Seems no chance Gerrard would have left Rangers for West Brom right now

In truth, it is difficult to see why Gerrard would be interested in swapping Rangers for West Brom.

A Premier League job may appeal in the summer if the Gers do win the league and go further in Europe. But having spent so long turning Rangers into title contenders, it would be a baffling move if Gerrard walked away now to go to the Hawthorns.
