Stan Collymore has told the Sunday People (12/1; page 53) that Manchester City should consider Toby Alderweireld or Jan Vertonghen as they look to strengthen their defence, while he also urged Pep Guardiola to spend big to land their Tottenham Hotspur teammate Harry Kane in the summer.
City’s title hopes already appear to have been dashed with Liverpool winning 20 of their opening 21 games.
It appears that significant changes may be required at the Etihad Stadium in the coming transfer windows. And Collymore suggested that Guardiola should look to Spurs to address issues at both ends of the pitch.
“I’d also look to see if I could prise Toby Alderweireld or Jan Vertonghen out of Tottenham,” he told the Sunday People (12/1; page 53) after suggesting City target Leicester’s Caglar Soyuncu.
“They are going to need to replace Sergio Aguero sooner rather than later. And dare I say, if Tottenham end this season trophy less, then I’d go and stick the money on the nose for Harry Kane,” he added.
“Yes, Spurs fans will say Kane would not go, but City can offer him the money he’d want and the opportunity to work with one of the world’s best coaches.”
TBR View – Spurs pair will surely be going nowhere
While there appears to be question marks surrounding Vertonghen’s future, it seems incredibly difficult to imagine either Alderweireld or Kane going anywhere anytime soon.
Alderweireld has only just signed a new contract. And Kane will surely have little interest in moving on off the back of one disappointing season.
Perhaps he may begin to consider his future if Spurs struggle to get themselves back into the title picture after this summer. But a move this year would be an incredible shock.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Vertonghen. As reported by The Telegraph, he is out of contract in the summer.
But you could understand if the large majority of Spurs fans were not worried about the chances of losing Alderweireld and Kane during the coming months.
