Liverpool have been linked with a shock move to sign Arsenal skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ahead of the summer window as the Gunners star’s contract ends in 2021 – and Stan Collymore’s comments could now ring true.
Football website 90Min have claimed that Aubameyang, who turns 31 in the summer, is interesting both Chelsea and Liverpool with Jurgen Klopp an obvious admirer of the Gabonese ace – given he coached Aubameyang at Borussia Dortmund.
The Sun, meanwhile, have suggested that Manchester United could look to orchestrate a Robin van Persie-like deal to sign £50million-rated Aubameyang. A move abroad is also an option, with Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona linked.
But a move to Liverpool is likely to prove tantalising given it would see Aubameyang return to work under Klopp – the manager who took Aubameyang from renowned in Europe, to becoming one of the world’s best.
Back in October, ex-Liverpool star Collymore claimed in his Mirror column that Aubameyang would be perfect for Klopp’s Liverpool – and now the Gunners star is being linked with a move to Anfield as his contract winds down.
“The former Borussia Dortmund star doesn’t have the same rapport with the crowd at the Emirates as some Arsenal legends of the past,” Collymore said. “If I were Gunners coach Unai Emery, I would be wondering about an over-reliance on the forward.
“He is also exactly the kind of pacy striker that Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp favours. Arsenal fans, you’ve been warned.”
TBR’s view – Should Liverpool sign Aubameyang?
With Sadio Mane and Mo Salah loosely linked with a move to Real Madrid ahead of the summer window, Klopp may have to bring in a replacement. Kylian Mbappe, Jadon Sancho and Timo Werner continue to be linked.
But all three are unproven in the Premier League, though they are believed to be more than capable of excelling in England’s top tier. However, if Klopp wants proven Premier League quality – look no further than Aubameyang.
