Stan Collymore delivered his instant reaction on Twitter to Aston Villa’s defeat against Southampton and raised a number of issues that he can see.
The Midlands giants were humbled 3-1 in the Premier League by Southampton and it was a key game for both teams.
Southampton have leapfrogged Villa in the table following the result and the latter are now down in the relegation spots.
Danny Ings (two) and Jack Stephens scored for the visitors, while captain Jack Grealish scored a mouth-watering consolation from outside the box.
Collymore has questions over team selection and tactics from manager Dean Smith, but most important views the club as one of four main contenders to get relegated.
“Jack “had a go” second half. Team insist on playing to Wesley’s Achilles heel (warned about it after game one), namely holding it up. Zero balls in behind. Team lightweight physically and mentally. Concerned about team selections. One of four solid relegation candidates,” Collymore wrote on his personal Twitter account.
Villa may have booked their spot in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, but their league form is concerning and they lost a big fixture at home to Southampton.
They have now lost four consecutive league matches which has seen them drop into the bottom three of the table and Smith does have a big job on his hands.
Villa’s next two games are against the only two teams below them in the table, with a home match against Norwich City on Boxing Day and a trip to Watford two days later.
There has to be serious questions asked about Smith if they fail in those upcoming matches.
