Aston Villa fan Stan Collymore has delivered a concerned prediction that his former club won’t have enough points to stay in the Premier League this season.
Dean Smith’s side are preparing to face Manchester City this weekend in the Carabao Cup final, but that doesn’t hide the fact they are in a serious relegation battle.
The Midlands club are in their first season back in the top-flight after winning promotion last year through the play-offs, but could soon be back in the Championship unless they pick up enough points.
Villa sit just a point above the relegation places as it stands with 11 games remaining and have a very difficult run-in on paper.
They face Leicester City, Chelsea, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Liverpool in four of their next five league games, which cranks up pressure on their trip to Newcastle United in the middle of that.
“I’ve got us getting between five and nine points. Historically neither will be enough. Hope I’m wrong but there are simply too many games against better teams chasing something tangible themselves,” Collymore wrote on his personal Twitter account.
Villa’s 2-0 away defeat to Southampton at the weekend was a serious blow to them and they could find themselves drop into the bottom three sooner rather than later.
It looks like the relegation scrap could go right down to the wire and Smith’s side travel to 18th-placed West Ham on the final day of the season.
Villa have plenty of games beforehand to try make themselves safe, but they have struggled against the top teams in the division this season and they need to try find a way of being more resilient.
They have conceded the most league goals so far this season (52) and that’s something that drastically has to change to help their survival chances.
