Stan Collymore gives verdict on Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins

Former Aston Villa striker Stan Collymore has lauded Ollie Watkins for the impact he has had on Dean Smith’s side.

The 24-year-old has been a regular in the starting XI since his summer move from Brentford, and he has impressed up to now.

Watkins has hit eight goals in 16 games and provided a couple of assists so far.

Watkins could and probably should have more goals to his name, but his output has been very respectable given the pressures of his transfer fee and coming up from the Championship.

It’s likely that with time, he will refine his game and become more clinical.

Watkins’ contributions have been lapped up by Collymore though, who was asked for his opinion on the Englishman on Twitter.

He said: “Excellent. Decent at holding the ball up when needed, works hard closing down across the front line, but his biggest strength is that he’ll just keep getting into scoring positions like a Duracell bunny!

“We’ve got the weaponry to give him, the goals will come.”

TBR’s View – Watkins has potential to be frightening

Villa paid a lot of money for Watkins, but the signs are there that he could become a real force in the Premier League.

It wasn’t his day yesterday against Palace, but he was still a massive threat, and has pace and power, and takes up great positions as Collymore says.

Eventually the £75,000-a-week star (Spotrac) will become more poised and self-assured in front of goal, and when that time comes, the man will be a huge danger.
