Stan Collymore have delivered a passionate Twitter rant about Aston Villa, who are currently struggling in their battle against relegation from the Premier League.
The Midlands club currently sit 19th in the top-flight as it stands and are two points away from safety, but they do have a game in hand on teams above them.
Dean Smith’s side suffered a heavy 4-0 away defeat on Monday night away to Leicester City, with Harvey Barnes and Jamie Vardy each scoring twice for the hosts at the King Power Stadium.
Villa have the worst defensive record in the division as it stands with 56 goals conceded in 28 league games, which is a big reason why they find themselves in the relegation zone with 10 games left to play.
Ex-Villa striker Collymore believes that his former side have an “average” group of players and has given a downbeat assessment of them.
“Squad quality is average. 5 genuine Prem quality, 2 of them keepers. Ability to defend as a unit poor. No regular goal threat. System of play too easy to play against, too open and learned too late (couple of decent counter attacking performances only)” Collymore wrote on his personal Twitter account.
Villa were given a reality check on Monday night with their hammering at Leicester, but there is no need to panic yet and there is plenty of time to get out of trouble still.
There are several teams down there all fearing the drop and a run of a couple of victories will pull any of them away from trouble, which is what Smith’s side have somehow got to do.
They need to make their home advantage count with upcoming games against Chelsea, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Manchester United all on their own patch, as well as a daunting trip to champions-elect Liverpool.
Villa’s spirited display in the Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City recently shows they do have plenty of quality and there are definitely individuals that can play a big role in their fight against relegation.
