Stan Collymore has revealed his delight about Aston Villa’s reported interest in Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland.
According to the Sun, the Midlands giant are preparing a £20million bid for the Championship shot-stopper this week.
It is understood that Stoke value him at £23million and Villa boss Dean Smith is keen to add a top-class number one with Premier League experience.
Butland, 26, has just had to spent a season in the Championship with Stoke and surely needs to get himself back in the elite league.
The 6ft 5in colossus has played 77 times in the Premier League and looked a promising talent, but stuck with Stoke last season after relegation.
He is a nine-time capped senior England international that is still valued highly by Stoke and Villa are looking for a new goalkeeper following their promotion via the Championship play-off final.
Collymore believes it would be a big bonus if Villa do manage to sign Butland and feels he deserves another shot in the top-flight.
“Goalie, for me, is most important signing of the summer. JB (Jack Butland) nowhere near his peak and plenty still to prove,” Collymore wrote on his personal Twitter account.
Villa may have to pay over the odds to land Butland this summer, but it may be a gamble worth taking.
He should be entering the peak years of his career and he needs to be given the chance to fulfil the potential so many feel he still has.
Smith definitely needs a new number one going into the Premier League campaign and the Stoke stopper has a decent track record.
He should have aspirations to win back the England number one position off Jordan Pickford, but that’s surely impossible if he stays in the Championship and Villa may be a great match for him.
