Stan Collymore backs Liverpool to bid for Tottenham star Harry Kane

Stan Collymore has claimed in his weekly column for The Mirror that Liverpool need to go all out to sign Tottenham striker Harry Kane.

The reigning champions were thumped 4-1 by league-leaders Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.

It leaves Liverpool 10 points behind the Citizens having played a game less and their hopes of retaining their crown look to have evaporated.

Since the turn of the year, the Reds have been nothing shy of hapless in some of their games and Jurgen Klopp has work to do.

Collymore thinks Liverpool need to ‘wake up and smell the coffee’ this summer, demanding that the club’s hierarchy part with some serious cash.

He thinks Kane should be right at the top of Klopp’s wanted list.

Collymore told The Mirror: “They do need to wake up and smell the coffee, which means the owners FSG spending money to go toe-to-toe with City in that period.

“It meant if City go out and buy Erling Haaland this summer then Liverpool must buy the next Robert Lewandowski or even put a bid in for Harry Kane.

“What they can’t do is just say, ‘We have a really good XI, some youngsters coming through and we can maintain our challenges that way’, because there are too many teams with the money to make sure that won’t be the case.”

TBR View: Kane is a pipedream for Liverpool

It seems madness to even suggest that the reigning champions would be capable of landing the Tottenham superstar.

Given his reputation and undoubted quality, Spurs are likely to want in the region of £100 million to secure his services and that’s not really Liverpool’s transfer style.

Kane is paid £200,000-a-week at Spurs and the whole package just doesn’t give off the scent of something Liverpool will do.

The Reds will need some reinforcements in the summer but sadly for Liverpool fans, it’s unlikely to be Kane that rocks up on Merseyside.
