Former Aston Villa and Liverpool striker, Stan Collymore, has admitted his pleasant surprise at the form and ability shown by new goalkeeper Emi Martinez this season.
Collymore admitted in his column for the Mirror that he had reservations over the signing of Martinez, given the ‘keeper’s inability to ever nail down the number one jersey at Arsenal.
However, Martinez has gone on to help Villa to win all four games this season so far and kept another clean-sheet in the 1-o win over Leicester last weekend.
And Collymore has conceded that he is pleased to be being proven wrong by the FA Cup winning stopper.
“Barkley and Martinez, in particular – and I’m happy to say my reservations about the latter have gone already. I wasn’t sure why someone who wasn’t good enough to be Arsenal’s No.1 at a time when they didn’t have a brilliant goalkeeping roster would be good enough for the job at Villa,” Collymore wrote in the Mirror.
“But he has been exceptional and all those Gooners who told me he was just unlucky look to have been right.”
Martinez, who was predominantly sent out on loan with the Gunners, excelled last season and completed a £20m move to Villa Park over the summer.
Collymore right here, Martinez is superb – TBR View
It’s safe to say that, at the moment anyway, that Emi Martinez is one of the best goalkeepers in the league.
Of course, Alisson and Ederson are levels above but in terms of the rest of the Premier League, he is rightn up there with the likes of Kasper Schmeichel, Nick Pope, and Rui Patricio.
It’s proven to be a shrewd piece of business by Dean Smith this has. And if you’re backing Stan Collymore into a corner to admit he was wrong, then you’ve definitely done something right!
