‘St. Totteringham’s day is a thing of the past’ – Three things learnt from Tottenham 2-0 Arsenal

Mesut Ozil is not the man for the big occasion

With just 16 touches in the first half, once again Mesut Ozil failed to stand up and be counted for Arsenal when it really matter. The German was anonymous on the right side of attack, with just one notable pass in the whole 90 minutes as he drifted a ball into Danny Welbeck.

The former Real Madrid star has previously been criticised for failing to turn up against strong opposition, and against second choice left-back Ben Davies, Ozil really should have done better. Without his creativity, the Gunners never looked threatening in attack.

It may be that Ozil does not suit the current set up chosen by Arsene Wenger. Ozil prefers to play in the number ten central role, but is being forced out wide where he is less effective.

What’s clear is that, whether the fault lies with Ozil or Wenger, he failed to perform at White Hart Lane, something that Arsenal can ill afford as they try to regain a place in the top four.
