With the problems Celtic have at the club and the lack of consistency with some players, it’s great to see at least one summer signing doing their talking on the pitch.
Unfortunately for Brendan Rodgers, the player in question is out on loan and not available for selection but the form of Hyeokkyu Kwon since joining St Mirren in January has the Paisley club’s fans buzzing.
Kwon has made two appearances for The Buddies and whilst he did seem to struggle against Rangers, the South Korean played a blinder in the 3-0 win over Hibs at the weekend.
Hyeokkyu Kwon is showing great potential for Celtic now
The 22-year-old defensive midfielder never made a single appearance for Brendan Rodgers this season but has already notched some much-needed game time under Stephen Robinson.
Against Rangers, Kwon had a mixed performance against the Ibrox club. Solid in the middle of the park, Kwon won 100% of his tackles but did miss a glorious chance to equalise for his new club. [Fotmob]
He won four out of 11 ground duels and had a passing of just 67%. Not an accomplished performance by any means but after spending most of the season out in the cold, it was always going to take time for him to get up to match speed.
And that is exactly what Kwon did in the 3-0 win over Hibs. Rated at 7.7, the midfielder’s passing accuracy increased to 90%.
But it was his defensive work that really made him shine. Defensively, Kwon was a powerhouse. With three interceptions, seven defensive actions and an incredible 13 ball recoveries, Hibs found it difficult to find a way past the on-loan Celtic man.
It was a brilliant performance that had the St Mirren supporters all saying the same thing.
St Mirren fans are loving Kwon
The South Korean is quickly becoming a fan favourite with the Paisley clubs supporters and from these comments, Kwon is being taken really closely to their hearts.
And another fan was glowing in his praise for Kwon, “Encouraging signs with the early days of his loan.
“Hopefully, he manages to kick on for us when he returns cause there’s definitely a player there.”
Brendan Rodgers sets high expectations for Hyeokkyu Kwon at St Mirren
After sealing his move to St Mirren, the Celtic manager was very complimentary about Kwon and what he thought of the £1m summer signing.
Rodgers said [Celtic TV], “I think for the likes of Kwon, he’s come in from the other side of the world. It’s been a challenge for him.
“I spoke to Stephen Robinson on him, he’s got lots of really good attributes, which is why he was brought to here. To get that experience and playing games is important for his development.
“Kwon, it’s a really good move for him in many aspects – he can stay in Glasgow and he’s going to a very, very good coach and coaching team. We expect him to improve playing games.”
And improve he certainly has. The Celtic supporters will be hoping that the Korean will continue to enjoy a fruitful loan spell at St Mirren as he is starting to show that with game time, Kwon looks a very decent prospect for Celtic.
