Spurs urged to consider ‘extraordinary’ 40-year-old coach who’d ‘excite the likes of Harry Kane’

Tottenham Hotspur should consider Rangers boss Steven Gerrard as a candidate for the Spurs role, according to Tony Cascarino.

Tottenham are currently on the lookout for a new permanent manager after sacking Jose Mourinho earlier this week.

Mourinho and his coaches were relieved of their duties on Monday, with Ryan Mason taking the reins until the end of the season.

North of the border, Rangers appointed the Liverpool legend in May 2018 and has done a superb job in putting together a high-quality team able to challenge for silverware.

Gerrard has had to work hard and be parient, with the 2019-20 season proving frustrating as Rangers were in Scottish Premiership contention by the winter break, only to fall away.

This season, however, the Light Blues have been relentless, cruising to their 55th title with 29 wins, six draws and not a single defeat from 35 league games.

Given Gerrard’s history with Liverpool, he has been tipped to take over at Anfield at some point in the future.

However, Cascarino would like to see the 40-year-old take on another role prior to linking up with his boyhood club, and thinks Spurs would be a good shout.

“One manager who looks capable of filling that role is Steven Gerrard,” the pundit wrote in a column for The Times, as quoted by Teamtalk.

“People say he will be the next Liverpool manager but maybe not, or, if so, perhaps he will do another job before then.

“What he has done at Rangers is extraordinary: the way he handles himself in interviews and the huge improvement of the team on the pitch.

“Would he excite the likes of Harry Kane? I would say he would.”

Gerrard could potentially be a good fit for Spurs, a young manager who’s shown he has what it takes to rebuild a team and get them fighting for – and winning – silverware in a high-pressure environment.

Realistically, would he go to Spurs? He’d have no reason not to, but at the same time, he’s built something special at Rangers and there’s still plenty for him to win at Ibrox, after which, he could potentially be ready for the Anfield hotseat.
