Damsgaard joined Sampdoria last September from Nordsjaelland.

The Italians reportedly paid £5.8m, making him Nordsjaelland’s third most profitable sale.

Damsgaard hit the ground running and clubs reportedly began monitoring him within months of joining.

The Dane made 35 Serie A appearances last season, registering two goals and four assists.

Gazzetta dello Sport speculated in January that he is now worth around £18m minimum.

“Believing in your own ability”

Damsgaard is also in Denmark’s squad at Euro 2020 and has enjoyed a stunning tournament so far.

Against Belgium, he covered every blade of grass and won huge plaudits from fans.

And in the crunch game against Russia, Damsgaard scored a simply wonderful opening goal en route to qualification.

The youngster collected the ball just outside the box, took a touch to line up a shot and curled home a sensational effort.

“Mikkel Damsgaard was finding those spaces,” Alex Scott said on BBC Sport (20:50).

“When you do, it’s about believing in your own ability.”

Dion Dublin, meanwhile, said (20:54): “Nobody really deserves to be a goal up, but the goal itself was outstanding.

“Damsgaard seems to strike the ball from the bottom and lift it up, he makes it spin a certain way.

“He doesn’t look at the ball, he looks at the white marks on the pitch to tell him how far out he his and how hard to hit it.

“It’s all about maths – these footballers are all mathematicians!”

And Micah Richards added (20:56): “The keeper has got absolutely no chance.

“Take nothing away from that finish from Mikkel Damsgaard. Outstanding!”

Denmark went on to beat Russia 4-1 and seal second place in Group B.
